Natural outdoor maternity photography at Whites Bay

The past couple of months have been full on in the best possible way. After photographing the Matua Sauvignon Blanc 50th Anniversary, I barely had time to catch my breath before a new opportunity appeared one that pushed me well beyond my usual comfort zone. A couple from work approached me and asked if I would consider doing a maternity photoshoot for them. If they had asked me a year earlier, I’m almost certain I would have politely declined. Portrait work, especially something as intimate and meaningful as maternity photography, felt like unfamiliar territory.

But that’s one of the things I love most about photography: it’s a journey. You grow by saying yes to new experiences, by stepping into spaces that challenge you, and by trusting your creative instincts even when they’re leading you somewhere new.

We met at Whites Bay in the late afternoon during the final week of spring. The light was soft, the air warm, and the beach had that calm, peaceful energy that makes it perfect for portraits. As we walked along the shoreline, I captured a series of images, some posed, some candid, all centred around the quiet anticipation and joy of expecting their first child. The setting sun created beautiful lines and shadows across the sand, adding a natural warmth to the photographs that I couldn’t have planned better if I tried.

I’m genuinely happy with how the images turned out, and even more pleased that the couple loved the selection I delivered. Their reaction reminded me why stepping outside your comfort zone matters. Growth doesn’t happen in the familiar; it happens in the moments when you say yes to something new and discover a part of your craft you didn’t know you were capable of.
